A re you one of those who get very bothered whenever a new post or article about metaverse pops up in your timeline?

Everywhere you look nowadays, you see a picture of a happy person using a VR glass and a general text about that so-called digital world, but it simply doesn’t make sense why people enjoy it so much, right?!

Then we invite you to go through this short article, and we hope it will bring some light to the topic (and some great insights for your next happy hour conversation with your friends).

WTH is the metaverse?

Is this the new app from (the previous) Facebook? A game? A website? How many Metaverses exist?

Well, let’s begin with the original concept of the word:

In futurism and science fiction, the metaverse is a hypothetical iteration of the internet as a single, universal and immersive virtual world facilitated by the use of virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) headsets. In colloquial use, a metaverse is a NETWORK OF 3D VIRTUAL WORLDS focused on social connection.

Taking from this point, it is important to tell you that this metaverse doesn’t exist (yet). What we have at the moment are, in fact, what we could call metaworlds, separated virtual worlds with their own specific rules, features, and community of users.

To make it easier, you can imagine the metaverse as a 3D internet and the metaworlds as websites: at some point in the near future, all (or at least most) metaworlds will be connected to the Metaverse network, and users will be able to navigate between them with their avatars and all the assets they hold.

But to ease your life, whenever someone tells you they are in the metaverse, it means that they are taking action to be in (at least) one of several metaworlds (Decentraland, Sandbox, Roblox, Horizon, etc.).

Why is there always a virtual reality gadget in the pictures?

No matter the virtual world you choose, it will present 3D and immersive features (or you can call it a virtual reality). What better way to show the concept of virtual reality than a VR Goggle? The image of the VR gadget immediately triggers the imagination of an immersive and digital experience.

On the other hand, it also generates confusion in the public because – here comes the plot twist – you can not access most metaverse platforms through VR gadgets. Yes, you read it right: at this moment, to access the most hyped platforms, the ones the big companies are investing on, you will need only an average computer.

You can have some fun with your Oculus Quest accessing Meta’s Horizon, but it won’t be useful for Sandbox, Roblox, or Decentraland, for example. For those, you will need a good old mouse and keyboard set.
